Do pure motives really matter to God? Can improper motives hurt you, steal your rewards from you, or cause you pain? Is it fine to carry on in your good works no matter what your motives are as long as you are helping others? Watch this program to discover God's Truth and love.

Who cares about motives as long as I'm performing good deeds?

Motivational Minute
Pure motives create a content heart.

Motive – an inner drive or impulse that causes one to act.

Throughout Scripture, God shares with us just how important the intention of the heart is to Him.

1 Chronicles 28:9
"…serve (God) with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts…"

Proverbs 16:2
"All a man's ways seem innocent to him, but motives are weighed by the Lord."

1 Corinthians 4:5
"(God) will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men's hearts…"

Matthew 6: 1-4
"Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

What is your motive in giving? The "Hypocrites" didn't give as an honor to God or even for the love of man. They gave for prideful reasons… to show off to others and to make themselves look good. To carry it into modern times, some hypocrites today only give because it saves them money on their taxes.

I'm in no way saying that saving money on one's taxes is not a good thing, but when it becomes the main reason to give to a particular organization, then it is hypocritical and the person has received their reward in full.

Have you been around someone who has to tell you all the wonderful things they have done for others? Again, God says to not let your "left hand know what your right hand is doing." It's not that we should hide our good works at any cost. Others should see our good works so it will lead them to praise God in heaven.

What we are talking about here is the REASON why we do good works. Our reason should always be to do the good work to help others and to the glory of God… Not for the purpose of boosting our own name and looking good to others.

Matthew 6: 5-6
"But when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. When you pray, go into our room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

Some of you are saying... Don't pray out loud? No problem! I have no intention of ever praying in public! Well, good try! But God is not saying to never pray in public. Instead, He is addressing the motive of the heart. WHY are you praying in public? If it is for pride or vanity in gaining self glory, then the inner drive is wrong. Our only purpose to pray is to speak to God.

James 4:1-3 (Improper motives can cause quarrels.)
"What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures."

Psalm 139:23-24
"Search me O God and know my heart. Test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting."
