Summary:

There are situations in everyone’s life that can cause worry. It can get to the point where we are even paralyzed because of anxious thoughts. Whether you are in the middle of a full blown case of worry or plagued by little bouts of it, God has something to say to us. He never intended for His children to live a life in knots over little or big things. Tune in to discover five ways that can lead you into a life free from worry!

Why do we worry or become anxious?

  1. Fear of the unknown
  2. We want to control the future and have things our way
  3. Because we have seen bad things happen to good people and don’t want the same thing to happen to us

What is worry according to the Dictionary?

  1. to feel or cause to feel uneasy or troubled
  2. To pull, bite or tear at repeatedly
  3. To bother; annoy
  4. Mental uneasiness or anxiety

Thesaurus: care, anxiety, distress, uneasiness, angst, concern, trouble, annoy, beset, harass, plague, tease, pester, bedevil, brood, fret, dwell on, mope, stew

Bedevil – to torment, harass, to worry or frustrate.

Anxiety

  1. A State of uneasiness; apprehension; worry
  2. Psychiatry: intense fear or dread that lacks a specific cause

Worry and anxiety are not new things. People in the Bible dealt with it all the time. We get some great answers on how to deal with it in our own lives by looking at what God says about it in the Bible!

  • Worry is a down payment on a debt not yet due.
  • Worry is stewing without doing
  • Worrying won’t keep the trouble away
  • Worrying won’t change anything for the good, but it will change you for the worse. – SHS
  • Worry Worts.. the drive themselves crazy and everyone else too!
Just in case you are a worry wort… others around you want you to know that you really get on our nerves.

Some people don’t know how to live unless they worry or fret all of the time. They have done it for so long that they think it is a normal way to live.

Luke 8:14 "The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature." NIV

Proverbs 12:25 "An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up." NIV

Many Christians walk around looking like the cruise director of the titanic.

You know, the people that can brighten up a room by just leaving it!

How to Stop Worrying

  1. Identify what is causing you to worry.

Write down everything that is going on in your life. When you write down something that makes your heart race, then those are the things that are causing you to worry or have anxiety. Ask yourself what can you do about it? Is it within your control or not? Take it to God in prayer.

Earthquakes, floods, lightening… we have no control over these things anyway, so why worry?!
  2. Take it all to God!

The greater the temptation to worry, the greater the need to be alone with God.

Muffin is 17 years old. Lately, she has decided that she wants to sleep downstairs in her bed rather than with us. The only problem is that her mind is going a little. She wakes up several times in the middle of the night and begins to whine. She knows she wants something but she just doesn’t know what it is. She goes to her food bowl then to the door to go outside, and she can’t get her bed configured just right. She paces around the house in frustration. Well, I decided that we needed a baby monitor. We were having a difficult time hearing her in the middle of the night so now whenever she whines, she has a direct line straight to our bedroom. As soon as she makes a noise, we know because we want to know.

Just as Muffin has a direct line to us, you and I have a direct line to God! It’s called prayer! He cares so much about us.

God is God! Thank God IN the situation, not for it.

No point sitting up all night worrying about it, God is going to be up anyway.

He counted the number of hairs on our head, and numbered them

He has a tremendous investment in you. He let his Son die for you.
He is vitally interested in every facet of your life.

Psalm 139:23-24 "Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." NIV

1 Peter 5:7 "Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you." NIV

Philippians 4:6-7 "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your heats and your minds in Christ Jesus." NIV

Philippians 4:6-7 "Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus." NLT (New Living Translation)

Nothing can make you feel as strong as a call to God for help.
  3. Focus on God instead of the situation

When you leave God out, you’ll find yourself without any invisible means of support. Great things are achieved by those who dare to believe that God inside them is superior to circumstances.

The way each day will look to you starts with who you’re looking to.

It's not the absence or the presence of problems that determines our peace of mind; it’s the absence or presence of God.

Focus on God and who He is! This could be a problem when you don’t know God, so get to know Him.

He is bigger than any giant in your life! Marriage problems, money problems, health problems, God is bigger than any of them!

He set the earth on its foundations! He put the stars in space and calls them each by name! He makes the clouds His chariot and rides on the wings of the wind!

Matthew 6:25 – 34 (Paraphrased... Please read the entire scripture in the Bible) Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or what you will wear. God knows all these things. He takes care of the birds of the air, and clothes the grass of the field which are here today and gone tomorrow, how much more does He care about you who are made in His very image?!

Matthew 6:33-35 "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." NIV
  4. Trust in God

John 14:1 Jesus speaking: "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in Me." NIV

John 14:27 Jesus speaking: "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." NIV

Psalm 94:18 "When I said, "My foot is slipping," Your love, O Lord, supported me." NIV

Psalm  94:19 "When anxiety was great within me, Your consolation brought joy to my soul." NIV

Psalm 23:4 "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me." NIV

I’ve never spoken about it on the show before, but years ago Doug and I found out that we couldn’t have children. It was a difficult time. I had a choice to make. Was I going to trust God in the middle of this news? Was I heartbroken? Yes. Did I cry? Yes. But I knew, down deep in my soul that God was God. God knew about this long before we did. It was just finally time to let we know. My sorrow turned into thanksgiving because I know that God sees the big picture. He is invested in me and wants the best for me, so I trust that He knows what He is doing! I was thankful that He was in control and I wasn’t because I would have messed up the deal and had some children. I don’t understand everything on this side of heaven, but God does and His goodness is overflowing and never stops. I trust in His goodness and love.

Soon after this, fear started to set into my mind. I started thinking about aging and how if everyone in my family passed away in their old age, I would be the only one left. I started to fear that I would be left all alone on this earth without anyone. These thoughts and fears drug me down into a deep and weary pit. Then I started remembering God’s truth. I reminded myself of who He is… following the things I telling you here today, and I sit here a free woman.

I often am amazed at the goodness of God. You know, He is ready to reveal Himself to us each and every day if we just look for Him. One day, God revealed His goodness to me through an elderly man that I’ve known for years. He and his wife never had children. His wife passed away years ago and now, well into his eighties, he can’t physically get around like he used to. He was living alone and had no children or siblings to help him. Then God moved in the heart of a man and woman who stepped up and took him in. This man is not alone. He is loved. He is cared for and he has a family to include sons and daughters. I rejoice for this man. In the middle of his situation, which probably seemed so bleak to him, God used him to remind me of how much God cares for each one of us. I don’t need to worry about the future. God certainly has it all in His care.

Many people have no trouble believing that God created the universe, that God healed the sick and raised the dead, that He split the red sea and over 2 million Jews walked across it on dry land, but they say.. you see Lord, I have a car payment due next week.. or You may have created this entire earth in six days but you’ve never had to deal with one of those finance companies!

What are you trusting in? Trust in God’s goodness, His faithfulness, and His ability to handle anything and everything in your life!
  5. Renew your mind

Christians are divorcing, stressed and worrisome because we don’t take the time to renew our minds.

Did the diet that helped you lose 20 pounds three years ago help you not gain it back today? Not unless you continued feeding your body the right foods! It’s the same with renewing our minds daily!

Every day the world bombards us with the wrong things. We have to combat these ways of thinking with putting the good stuff back in to our minds.

Your mind has brought you to where you are and your mind will take you to where you will go. We can renew it and re-energize it.

Take every thought captive! We have the power to control our minds!

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 "The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." NIV

Ecclesiastes 11:10 "...refuse to worry, and keep your body healthy." NLT(New Living Translation)

Talk back to your internal critic.

    Renew: make new again

Psalm 51:10 "Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me." NIV

Isaiah 40:31 "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." NIV

2 Corinthians 4:16 "Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day." NIV

Romans 12:2 "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is- His good, pleasing and perfect will." NIV

2 Corinthians 7:4b Paul speaking "…in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds." NIV

God’s Book is one of love…

Galatians 5:1"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." NIV

2 Corinthians 4:17-18 "For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." NIV

Anxiety

Luke 21:34 "Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap." NIV

Dissipation is to indulge in extravagant pursuit of pleasure

Ecclesiastes 11:10 "…banish anxiety from your heart and cast off the troubles of your body…" NIV

You can never trust God too much.

It’s not the mountains we conquer, but ourselves. – Sir Edmond Hillary

Don’t anticipate trouble

God never built a Christian strong enough to carry today’s duties and tomorrow’s anxieties piled on top of them. Theodore Ledyard Cuyler

Those who can see God’s hand in everything can leave everything in God’s hands.

A day hemmed in prayer is less likely to unravel.

Prayer may not change all things for you, but it sure changes you for all things. Prayer is the stop that keeps you going.

No problem is too large for God’s intervention, and no person is too small for God’s attention.

Proverbs 12:10 "A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal…" NIV
