Summary:

Who should sing to God? What kinds of songs should we sing? When should we sing? Enjoy this program of music coupled with great Scriptures that answer these questions!

Sharon's Commentary

  • Not everyone is meant to sing solos, but we are all meant to sing and rejoice in the Lord!
  • Don't stifle your spirit. Sing out to God!
  • Psalm 27: 6b (NIV): "I will sing and make music to the Lord."
  • Psalm 108: 1-5 (NIV): "My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing and make music with all my soul. Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn. I will praise You, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing of You among the peoples. For great is Your love, higher than the heavens; Your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens. And let Your glory be over all the earth." (David)
Motivational Minute:
Psalm 104: 33-34 (NIV): "I will sing to the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. May my meditation be pleasing to Him, as I rejoice in the Lord."

What Kind of songs should we sing?

Sing all kinds of songs, of course, but the Bible also tells us to sing a New Song!

Psalm 40: 3 (NIV): "He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God."

Psalm 33: 1-5 (NIV) "Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise Him. Praise the Lord with the harp; make music to Him on the ten-stringed lyre. Sing to Him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy. For the Word of the Lord is right and true; He is faithful in all He does. The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of His unfailing love."

Isaiah 42:10 – 12 (NIV): "Sing to the Lord a new song."

When should we Sing?

Psalm 30:11-12 (NIV): "You turned my wailing into dancing; You removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing to You and not be silent."

Psalm 59:16-17 (NIV): "But I will sing of Your strength, in the morning I will sing of Your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble. O my strength, I sing praise to You; You, O God, are my fortress, my loving God." (David)

Who should sing?

Isaiah 42:10 – 12 (NIV): "Sing to the Lord a new song, His praise from the ends of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, you islands, and all who live in them. Let the desert and its towns raise their voices; let the settlements where Kedar lives rejoice. Let the people of Sela sing for joy; let them shout from the mountaintops."

Luke 19:37 – 40 (NIV): (this is when Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem at the Triumphal Entry) "When He (Jesus) came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: 'Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!'"

Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, 'Teacher, rebuke your disciples!'
'I tell you,' He replied, 'if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.'"

Take Action:

Psalm 108 (NIV): "I will sing and make music with all my soul."
